Ask A Pro Questions About Professional Photographer

Jenny asks…

what sd card would a professional photographer use?

i have a canon eos 500d camera. what would be the best choice of sd card, that a professional photographer would choose.

motonet answers:

None.

Pros shoot CF.

Honestly, unless you shoot serious video there’s no reason to agonize about it. You either act as a herd animal and buy Sandisk or you use common sense and get another brand like lexar, kingston or transcend, For an old camera like yours any brand card will do

Mark asks…

Do you think the professional photographer did a good job on this family photo?

Some of my family have been saying I should demand a refund but I found the photographer to be very professional and my man looks so sexay in that fairy costume.

LMAO, I’m sorry, I can’t even keep pretending this is really my picture. Who on earth would allow their husband to dress like that?

motonet answers:

Lol , only a REAL man can dress up like a fairy!

I think it looks good. Very cute :)

Personally, I like it because it adds that touch that it looks like it was painted.

Susan asks…

What is the best camera for a professional photographer?

I am looking for the best camera for a professional photographer. Price doesn’t matter. Thanks!
For the most part price doesn’t matter. I don’t want to spend like thousands of dollars. I am just looking for a good quality camera to take pictures with.

motonet answers:

The best camera for a pro is the one which suits their specific requirements best.

If you were actually in need of a “professional” camera you would know this already.

Donald asks…

what kind type of degree do you need to be a Professional photographer?

right now im at my local community college getting my two year degree in photography, is this good enough to get be a professional photographer or will i need to get my bachelors degree to get employment?

motonet answers:

No degree is needed, however what your doing is great, photography is a skill that is learnt, using light and making images to order does require study so make sure you excell at the studio component of your course if you wish to be above the wedding fotog level….

Find a niche, make a portfolio and take it to those hire photographers in that niche,

anyone that that can learn lighting and design and can sell themself can do it, having the “eye” and so forth is garbage, great photographers study light and making images

some business courses would be helpful, finding a niche that pays is the key i have found

Daniel asks…

Education needed to be a professional photographer?

What education do you need to be a professional photographer and what courses are best to take to help with this career.

motonet answers:

Education level I’m not sure. But for classes, art classes and you might wanna start with a photography class. And a web design class because some photographers build/design their own pages (you can get someone else to design it). If u want to have your own business, a business class or how to manage your own business class wouldn’t hurt. Try going to work in a photography shop, be an assistant so you can get a good feel of the work. Gotta be handy with cameras, lighting, computers…. Def a computer cause you use it to edit….

Linda asks…

Professional photographer willing to email some tips?

I’m fifteen and am currently aspiring to be a photographer, though I don’t think I’ll be able to make a career out of it… It’s just something I enjoy doing. I have a regular point and shoot, which isn’t extremely fancy, but it works for someone at my amateur level. I was wondering if there are any advanced/professional photographers who are willing to share a tip or two? If you could leave your email/link to your website, I would be grateful.

motonet answers:

I started out the same way. My first camera was a Brownie Holiday Flash, and a Mamiya-Kominar/Tower 18B from Sears, with a fixed 50mm lens. Today, I advise those like you to use their cellphone camera to take pictures until they can reliably make images with proper composition, lighting, and exposure. As example, I provide a link, http://s852.photobucket.com/albums/ab86/starman2009/, to pictures I made on vacation in 2009 with my phone camera.

To really learn how to make pictures, try to imitate those you see in magazines and books that catch your eye. Whenever possible, keep a copy, either by photographing the picture with your cellphone camera, or copying it on a scanner, or even tearing the page out of the magazine. If all else fails, keep a notebook at hand and sketch the picture. Being able to draw has been one of the most useful skills I’ve found.

Your collection is what’s called a “swipe file,” and you review it from time to time for ideas for your own work. Learn how to “see” the picture BEFORE you pull out the camera. If you’re “making” pictures, as opposed to “taking” them, always LOOK FOR THE BACKGROUND FIRST, then place your subject in front of it and shoot the shot.

Lastly, take your images to a photographer and ask for guidance. You might also take some of them, along with a story describing them, to newspapers and magazines in your area, or even send them out of town. Some may print them, or perhaps send them back with words of advice.

Steven asks…

I would like to start a camera club for Latinos in Chicago where do I begin? I am a professional photographer.

I have belonged to a few camera clubs in the past, but I find that I am among the few Latinas in the clubs. I would like to start a club for Professional Latino Photographers. Of course, to be a member, you DO NOT have to be Latino, but I would like to start a network of Spanish speaking professional photographers. The club would not be limited to photography, but primarily photography. We would network, share resources and discuss all things having to do with the Latin community.

motonet answers:

Start it at one of their anti-American marches

Nancy asks…

I want buy a good professional photographer HELP?

Ok I looking on internet from Wal mart. I don’t know which is really good and I don’t want SPEND over 300 dollar. I prefer under 300 dollar. have you bought the professional photographer from wal mart? I don’t say regular camera to take simple picture. I want real photographer.

If wal mart is no good. What kind else another store better? Help?

motonet answers:

Sorry but Walmart don’t sell “photographers”, but they sell cameras!!! Try one of those, they are cheaper to maintain (a photographer needs food, clothing, equipment, car, apartment and so on). So try buying a camera instead of a “photographer”.

Steven asks…

Classes to take be a professional photographer?

I want to be a professional photographer when I get out of college, and I was wondering what classes would I have to take in high school and college in order to do so? I know there are photography classes, but are there any other essential classes?

motonet answers:

You are better off taking a business and marketing course.
Running your own business (whether photography or anything else) is as much about your business and customer marketing skills as it is about the trade itself.

Robert asks…

Is anyone on here a professional photographer?

ok here’s the deal i need 2 interview a professional photographer for my career Research Paper.

1.Why did you choose this occupation?

2.What do you enjoy most about this job?

3.What education is required for this occupation?

4.What is the average salary for this occupation?

5.How many hours do you work in a week?

plz help this is a major grade.

motonet answers:

1. I chose this because it was something that I was passionate about. I started out as a journalist in a local paper. It wasn’t fitting me right, and then my boss saw my photography and decided to switch me. As a little kid, I always used to steal my mothers camera to take pictures of things, and I got really good at it. And then one day, I just new that I wanted to be a photographer.
2. I enjoy having such a free and open minded occupation. I love being able to take pictures of anything and everything around me. I love when I see that I have taken a really good picture, because then I know that I have been improving. I also enjoy looking at the world through the lens. You see things so much differently.
3. I took various classes, to outline the requirements and professionalism of being a photographer. I took a year apprenticing a professional photographer to learn about lighting and angles, and all of the important things, and then I just went.
4. There really is no average salary for this occupation. It depends on a lot of things. Most importantly, how good you are at this job. Depending on the kind of job you get, you could be paid by the picture, or by the hour. And unfortunately, there is a good chance that you could be unemployed.
5. With my job, there isn’t really a line between working and pleasure photography. I bring in pictures that I take in my free time, or I go out to find pictures. I almost always have a camera around my neck, and my supplies in my car.

Goodbye now!

Richard asks…

What’s the salary of a professional photographer?

I’m doing a research paper on professional photographers and I need to know the salary, and a little bit more information of professional photographers. Thank you for helping!

motonet answers:

Did you think of using the search function on here (or even google).

This question is asked and answered about 10 times a week at least.

It varies considerably is the answer.

Michael asks…

As a professional photographer do you set your auto balance?

If you are a professional event photographer (weddings, birthdays,…) I was wondering if you set your auto-balance to auto, or do you actually manually pre-set it based on where you are shooting?

Also what do you set you metering at? Evaluative, center weight,…?

motonet answers:

90% of the time, my white balance is on auto. The only time I change is is if I am using a flash with a CTO gel while photographing inside. Even though everything is tungsten light, the camera would automatically switch to “flash” when the flash is attached, so I manually set it to tungsten.

Generally, I use evaluative metering then use exposure compensation if neccesary.

Donna asks…

DOES ANYBODY STILL BELIEVE IN THE PROFESSIONAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?

Just to satisfy my own curiosity. Would you hire a true accredited professional photographer to photograph your wedding or a friend or someone else with at digital camera who just likes to photograph weddings on the weekends for a lower price?

motonet answers:

Yes.

I would not consider hiring anyone but a professional if I were to get married and have pictures taken.

William asks…

Do you need to have GCSES to become a professional photographer ?

hi, Im being home educated and im really interested in photography and am planning on taking a photography course when im 16 i wanted to know if you need to have GCSES to become a professional photographer. i mean cant i just take the course when im 16 ? also do you have to go to uni and how many years does it take to become a pro photographer ? thanks alot

motonet answers:

In short. NO. You don’t need any GCSE’s or any formal qualifications to become a professional photographer.

BUT, getting a formal education in photography does help a great deal. Forging a successful career in photography is a very difficult task. If you go to uni or college, you will have instant access to high end equipment including camera’s and studios that you might not get otherwise. Plus, whilst there you can make all the usual mistakes people make and they won’t really matter much whereas when you’re out there in the real world trying to make a life out of it and trying to earn money, there isn’t really much scope for mistakes.

Plus what being in education will do is teach you the theory side of things too and, while that might not sound tempting, it will give your practice more depth and set you apart from those out there who go buy a camera, read a couple of magazines on technique and call themselves pro’s (sorry, snobby i know but it irritates the hell out of me).

And there’s also the connection’s you’ll make whilst working alongside industry. These are invaluable and you cannot make enough whereas out in the real world without the experience you’re going to struggle to keep your head above the crowd and get noticed.

A uni course is 3 years full time. I’m not sure how long a GCSE course is since they’ve changed a lot since i took mine.

Ken asks…

how much can you make if you are a professional photographer?

How much can you make if you become an professional photographer? Do I need a 2yr degree or 4 yr degree? Right now I’m 35yr old!

motonet answers:

Potentially millions. Realistically, 25-50k but it all depends on what genre and how good you are at both photography and the business side of things.

Linda asks…

I need to find a professional photographer in the Anderson SC area to do a classic pinup photoshoot of me.?

If you are a professional photographer, or can suggest a good photographer, please contact me!

motonet answers:

Ask your parents to let you look at the local yellow pages. They can drive you over to see the actual work that these studios do.

Edit: Sorry, I didn’t think this was a serious question. With all the Twilighters on here, I made a quick assumption. Later, Daisy

Donna asks…

How does someone classify themselves as a “Semi Professional” Photographer?

I was talking to my friend yesterday and he said he would take my senior pictures for next year since he is pretty much a semi professional photographer. He was a high school senior last year and took his own senior picture and personally it was pretty average if you ask me. I’ve never seen any of his other photography. So I just want to know how someone classifies themselves as a semi-professional?

motonet answers:

Well he probably has a little experience in taking photos of nature
basic anyone can pick up a camera and try to be a photographer

this means that he probably has no real experience or has ever worked for a professional place of business

make sure he has a legit camera, find out his experience, get more examples, find if he had any previous work or had taken any photographer classes

i suggest you just go to a professional because sometimes semi professional means that they are inexperienced

Ask A Pro Questions About Professional Photographer

Daniel asks…

Becoming a professional photographer?

I am interested in becoming a professional photographer. I have been taking pictures for forever, and not just your everyday, run of the mill…oh look this way…say cheese pictures. I enjoy creating art. I have thouht about turning my passion into a business, I would like to find a good mentor to look at some of the recent photos that I have taken. Do photographers usually do this considering that the person they are mentoring will someday be there competition? What are some steps to getting started in this business…I have a camera and am enrolled at a local school for photography classes. Also do most professional photographers develop their own film, or can you recommend a good company for that purpose.

motonet answers:

I don’t know about finding a photographer who will let you do an apprenticeship under he/her. You will just have to go around and ask a few, it is possible.

I can answer your question about developing, I am a photographer and I use a service to have my photographs developed. I haven’t the space to do it myself and have switched to digital prints anyway. It is just easier.

Mary asks…

How much can you earn being a professional photographer?

Was wondering how much a year you could earn being a professional photographer. Im thinking about sports photography eg. snowboarding, bmxing, surfing, mountain biking ect, ect
Please state what currency.
Thanks

motonet answers:

You can potentially earn millions.
Most pros earn between 25-50k (you can pick your own currency as it is roughly that amount in US UK or EURO)

Many so called pros start their business with absolutely no actual business knowledge – earn peanuts and go bust in months.

Sports photography is a pretty specialist field and the best earn good money, many scrape by though.

Jenny asks…

where can I find a professional studio photographer?

My girl friend wants her nude / sexy photo taken for me …….. real nice professional photographer. I have never thought about it nor looked into such, any idea how / where we can find one that are professional and good ?

motonet answers:

You can search google or bing like the other person said. You can also search on www.craigslist.org and www.modelmahem.com
A couple things to remember:
1. Make sure you are with a friend
2. You will probably feel more comfortable with a lady photographer, and she will know what you want to show, and what you want to hide.
(This coming from a guy)
3. Beware the creepers!!!! This area of photography is full of creepers. More so on Craigslist, less on model mahem, and studios.
4. Look at their work!!!

Sharon asks…

Business side of becoming professional photographer?

My dream is to become a professional photographer, and to have my own business. I have bought a camera (rebel xti) and am taking free pictures at this point, to gain the experience and develop my personal style, but what do I have to do on the legal business side to open my own business?

motonet answers:

First get some experience as a pro by working for one as an assistant.
You did not mention where you learned how to use your camera (like school?) You will need at least a few semesters of this to have the skills necessary to be a pro and develop a good book (portfolio) to get a job with a photographer.

Shooting for fee tells everyone how much your work is worth … Not a good thing … You can flip burgers for $8 an hour, so your work has to be at least that good.

It takes years of working in one of the specialties in photography to develop a style that photo editors and art directors will associate with you.

Look here to see what the pros in your area are doing:

http://www.asmp.org/findaphotographer/

Maybe you can get one of them to hire you.

Then, once you have your education, experience and all your gear make an appointment with SCORE and have them help you develop a business plan and marketing plan. From there you will want to start an LLC and build a website. You can see if your business idea passes the “giggle” test and later the “smell” test by building a P&L spreadsheet. That will tell you more that any other business tool in a very short time.

In five to six years, you may be ready to go out on your own.

Ask A Pro Questions About Professional Photographer

Jenny asks…

What defines a professional photographer?

For someone to have the title ‘professional photographer‘, what is required?
Do they need a degree in photography (from going to uni) and be working in an area of photography as a profession?
Or could they simply have the degree but not have the job at the time?
Or…. could they have a job in photography but not have the degree?
What is the criteria anyway? Im getting the feeling that you have to have the degree, but not necessarily the job also?

Im in Australia too if that helps,
Thanks :D

motonet answers:

The title “professional photographer” is one that you confer upon yourself. Just look in the mirror and declare yourself a professional photographer. That is all that is required. Unlike disciplines like law or medicine, you don’t need to complete years of formal training or pass a tedious exam.

You don’t need a degree. You don’t need a job. You don’t even need a camera. One of my colleagues nearby creates scenes on a flatbed scanner using 2-D and 3-D objects and creates enviable photographic art. Just say the words; it’s like magic.

And has been for me since 1989…

I hope this helps!
Darin

Daniel asks…

how can i become a professional photographer?

I’m still only a freshmen at high school, but I’ve been thinking about my career options. and what exactly do I have to do to become a professional photographer? like do i have to go to art collage? how long will it take? what type of photography is there to do and how much will it pay? if you can anser any of these questions, please feel free too!!

motonet answers:

Interesting question. Depends on what kind of photographer, and what kind of talent you have. Before I start, I have seen so many photojournalist go into studio photography because they just didn’t have the right eye.

There are different kinds of photographers. Some work on great technique, others want to tell a story though image which requires dynamic creativity at a moments notice.

The aim is always a great photo, great composition, and such, but the best way to find out what you might like is just pick up any old camera and start shooting. If you see something coming out, try to find a good entry-level camera to expand your skills.

I would recommend a good old fashion 35 mm SLR (I started with a Pentax K1000-as manual as you can get), with little automatic features, manual focus and a variety of cheap lens and filters for various effects.

If you decide to take it to the next step, take some photography classes in high school and college. If you want to go photojournalism, you are going to need your undergraduate degree to even get an interview.

Most new photographers work for free, or hardly anything. Most start out shooting the local sporting events, and going on’s for the idea of giving or selling to the local news for credit. Once you build a portfolio, you will also build a client base that will one day hopefully start paying you for your endeavors.

Talent and experience says the most. Well-rounded is ideal. But it all starts with the interest.

The other part is to network with the local photographers in your area. If you shoot football games, you will meet a few shutterbugs. They will give you some ideas about what you can expect in selling shots and getting jobs at various newspapers. At least for you, most local newspapers are so cheap, they welcome new people for just the savings.

David asks…

Should i model for a professional photographer?

I just decided I wanted to get into modeling. I posted some photos and got some feedback from a professional photographer who would like to work with me. He says that he pays models by the hour. He has a legit website of photos and seems nice. Should I go for it? I’ve never done this before so I don’t know the process or legitimacy/what questions I should ask him before accepting?

Thanks !

motonet answers:

Hang on…… You want to “get into modeling” and yet you are asking if you should work with a professional photographer??

What exactly is it you think that models do??

You ask
where
when
how much
what for
will there be a stylist and mua
etc etc

Ken asks…

MIL took baby to professional photographer and never told me?

MIL took baby to professional photographer last week and gave the pics to my husband as a ‘surprise’ father’s day gift. We had dinner two nights before she took her and never mentioned anything about taking her to a photographer. She still hasn’t said a word to me about the pics. Do I have a right to be upset?

Ask A Pro Questions About Professional Photographer

Helen asks…

I want to become a professional photographer?

I want to become a professional photographer. I have no experience in this area except maybe the pics i took by myself and of my family. I love photography and I think I would do really well. so i guess my question is.. what do i need to know? What do i need to know in order to become a photographer, is there a class I have to take, What kind of camera would you recommend? Any book recommendations if a class isnt available? Any help with this would be great!

motonet answers:

Photography is an art but there’s more to it. You also have to understand the science and technology behind the equipment we use.

You will have to understand the basics of composition, balance, color, light, contrast, etc, etc, etc…. And you will also need to know how to set your focal length, aperture, shutter speed and set how and when. There’s a quite a bit of math involved in this as well.

If you have ZERO knowledge or experience, a good place to start is a photography class at high school or college. It will usually teach you all the basics of composition, technique, as well as technology and theory.

What kind of camera really doesn’t matter. Typically, you’d start with SLR (single lens reflex) type camera where you can change your lens. You may start with film or digital. If you cannot afford an SLR, you can actually use any point-and-shoot type camera. You will have some limitations but it will be a good tool to learn proper composition.

As to books, here’s an idea. Just go to your local library and grab anything to do with photography. You should be able to find a few dozen. Just start reading. Since you have no knowledge at this point, anything you read will be a gain.

Daniel asks…

What camara should I buy to get started as a professional photographer?!?

I want to become a professional photographer but I dont know what camara should I get to start practicing and things like that! Would you help me please!!!??

motonet answers:

You may have noticed that the pros use either full frame cameras like the Nikon D3s or Canon 1Ds, Mark III (both over $5,000) or cropped frame cameras like the Nikon D300 or Canon 7D (both close to $2,000) These prices do NOT include any lenses.

Usually by the time you have taken enough classes in photography and worked as an assistant to a pro, you will know what you need. You seem to think that if you buy the “right” camera, becoming a pro is easy.

Spend some time rummaging around in the Nikon and Canon websites and see what is available in the way of professional camera systems and then sign up for a class in photography..

Susan asks…

Hire a Family member who is a professional Photographer for our Wedding?

My fiance’s sister-in-law’s sister is a professional Photographer so we would like have her do our photos how ever I am not sure how well it would go over. I would like her to enjoy herself of course as a guest at our wedding as she is part of the family but I’m not sure if the obligation would get in the way. Would the whole “don’t mix pleasure with business” take any effect, so to speak?

motonet answers:

If this is someone you would normally invite to the wedding then don’t hire her. You are correct, working would take away the pleasure of the event because she wouldn’t be able to visit w/ the rest of the family while she is working.

At least that’s how it works for the photographers in my family: they don’t want to work at family events like weddings but they are open to portrait settings. (so maybe you can work in some kind of compromise)

James asks…

Going to a professional photographer for fun?

My friend and I want to get our pictures taken by a professional photographer for fun. Are there photographers out there that would do that? Is it weird? xD
Lol of course I would pay.

motonet answers:

Sure there are, as long as you’re willing to pay.

Ask A Pro Questions About Professional Photographer

Betty asks…

What are the accesories that professional photographer use for their camaras?

Hey, What are the accesories that professional photographer use for their camaras?

motonet answers:

That’s a pretty broad question, but I will state a few things just off the top of my head:

Lens hood

Quality hot shoe mount external flash

Radio and infrared trigger units for above flash and for studio lights

Various filters such as polarizer, neutral density, graduated neutral density, an 812 warming filter to reduce blue cast with daylight film in the shade.

Battery grip if the camera does not have one built in.

Those are camera specific. That does not even touch the myriad of things such as studio lights, reflectors, lenses, tripods, backgrounds, cases, and software / computers.

Steve

Sandy asks…

How much should I be willing to pay a Certified Professional Photographer?

I’ve been searching for a photographer for a wedding, and recently came across one touting that he is a “Certified Professional Photographer” he wanted $500 just to talk to him and mentioned that $4000 was “about average” for a total cost. This seems extreme to me, and I wish to compare, but can’t find any price lists anywhere. So does anyone know what the average “certified professional photographer” really costs?

motonet answers:

Ok- first of all there is no certification of photographers(in the US anyway)
As far as the price goes it depends on the area you are in. 4 grand sounds pricey to me, I wouldn’t pay that much, but that’s me. I have never charged for a meet. Usually at the meeting the photog shows the client his portfolio and then decides yes or no- if no, handshake, have nice day! If yes, the the contract comes out, is gone over agreed to and signed and then a deposit is collected to secure the date. The deposits can range any from 1/3 to half of the cost of the package. I just did a quik search and the average price for full day coverage is around $2500. That included prices as low as $200 to as high as $7000. Depending on what one was wanting.

George asks…

I want to know how to edit photos like a professional photographer. I want to know how like in professional we?

I want to know how to edit photos like a professional photographer. I want to know how like in professional wedding photos the photographer will have a photo of a bride in black and white but the flowers will be in color, how do they do that?

motonet answers:

To be honest, selective coloring is tacky and over done, but here is the link to a good tutorial, all you need is photoshop to do the trick.

Donna asks…

Do you own a Nikon and does it make you a professional photographer?

Just because you bought a Nikon, does that make you a professional photographer? I’m curious to collect opinions on why many view Nikon owners as professionals…please give me your honest opinions as I am collecting this information for a college project.

motonet answers:

Nobody with more than half a brain in their head, or that knows anything about photography views Nikon owners as professional photographers just by the mere fact that they own a Nikon – especially if the Nikon owner happens to own one of the crappy Nikons – and, yes, Nikon has made one or two of those in its day.

Now, if you see someone with a digital Hasselblad, Mamiya, or PhaseOne, odds are pretty darn good THEY’RE a professional – either that, or they’re just so rich that they should probably be eaten by the peasantry.

Want to trade rapidshare premium account for Microsoft office 2007 professional?

I’ll make sure everything work for you first, that means you will have your microsoft 2007 professional (fully installed full version) you can check everything, and perhaps use it for 1 or 2 days if you want. Then please give me the account after, I just really “fcking need one” I’m very impatient waiting for the time. Tried all the method there is available, but still can’t pass the waiting screen. But please don’t runaway after I give you the microsoft, just don’t be a *****.

Mandy asks…

I have Microsoft office 2007 product key & disc but no disc drive?

I have a netbook with no CD tray so I tried to download a copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 but they only have 2010 now. What am I able to do about this problem, without buying an external disc drive?

motonet answers:

Since you own a copy, it would not be illegal to torrent it. Get it through http://thepiratebay.org/ and use bittorrent from http://bittorent.com/ .

The best one to download is http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5426553/Microsoft_Office_2007_-_Full_Package_-_Easy_Install_%5BDOLEFISH%5D

Paul asks…

If a student purchases Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007…?

…would they be able to install it on a single home computer? My problem is that I purchased it instead of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 (not Plus) and it says something about a volume license, so could I (an individual) still use it?

motonet answers:

I’m sure you can use it.
