Your questions about motocross gear

Jenny asks…

Where can I buy Motocross Gear?

I currently own a 91 kawasaki kx 125 and was looking to buy some motocross gear. I don’t really have any local dealers, and am not sure which site to buy from to get the best deals. If anyone can recommend a site, or even better recommend which gear to get so it can match my bike will be greatly appreciated ( generally white, green, black for my bike). I need everything, including protection, so yeah… will pick best answer! :L

motonet answers:

If you like kawasaki you can go to there website and find the accessories tab and it will have kawasaki gear, or try Fox Racing Sports

Linda asks…

question about motocross gear?

I weigh about 92 pounds and I’m about almost 5 feet, I don’t know if I should go with the woman motocross gear or the youth size? Any suggestions?

motonet answers:

Go with youth. check out denniskirk.com for closeout deals and they have great sizing charts to help you get measurements to make sure it all fits right, if youre planning on growing out of it, its nice to save the money. womens are cut differently, the youth will fit longer as your grow and change shapes

Sandra asks…

How do you know what gear to hit a jump in motocross?

I’m beginning in motocross and i’m going to start going to the track soon, been riding dirt bikes for a long time just never really knew… What gear/speed should i hit that jump? lmao any answers will help… thanks.

motonet answers:

just make sure your not on the rev limiter on the face of the jump.

And it differs, i have it a 75ft jump 4th gear pinned,and a 90ft jump in 3rd gear.
it depends on the angle of the jump, it will just come to you with experince.

oh yeah be sure to get corner speed first, the jumps will come naturally.

Daniel asks…

where can i find cheap motocross gear?

a lot of company’s like fox and fly have very expensive motocross gear..are there any good company’s or websites i can go on where i can get quality gear for cheaper then fox and fly racing gear….by gear i mean jersey, pants, boots, helmets, knee pads, leatt brace, goggles, and gloves….

also are there any websites that i can order really awesome graphics for my dirt bike

motonet answers:

Try www.locomx.com and click “dumpster dive” or the “clearance” and you can try www.sikspak.com for some graphics.

James asks…

Im a girl, where can i find CHEAP motocross gear?

im a 14 year old girl, and i have just became interested in motocross, and i really want to do it. The problem is, my parents think its too expensive. Where can i find cheap gear and a bike?
THANKS :) )

motonet answers:

To get gear for the CHEAPEST amount possible…do this…
go to a local mx shop that has ladies gear to try on. Try on several different brands and styles but don’t buy any of it there. Write down the gear brand you like and what sizes you wear. Head home, jump on the computer and get on Ebay! People sell gear for crazy low prices on there if you look around! ( I have got pants for $10 that were brand new!)
Not to be a debbie downer…but your parents are right about it being expensive. Gear is BY FAR the cheapest part of motocross. Bikes break a lot, and the repairs don’t always come cheap. Tell them you understand the cost issues and you are willing to pick up chores and help out around the house. Good luck girl, I’m a girl too and I ride a crf150rb. Great bike! You aren’t going to find a lot of cheap bikes. If you do realize there is something wrong with it and will cost more to get it properly working. If I were you I would hunt for a crf150rb or regualr r version. They are 4-strokes and good starter bikes, but not wimpy by any means. Dealerships where I live have em’ running from around 3,300-4,900. That is brand new. Check your local paper or see some used bikes at either a dealership or take a peek on Craig’s list!

Your questions about shift motocross gear

Ken asks…

Motocross Do you shift down a gear when going into a corner?

motonet answers:

i dont shift down. if anything i find the deepest rut, or line then ill clutch and gas and when im almost out the turn i let go of the clutch. or ill sit up on my gas tank and clutch and hair pin turn on the corner. but no dont shift.

Daniel asks…

how can you change gears with motocross boots?

i bought a new pair of boots and it is the first time i bought boots because i didn’t think it was necessary. but it seems like i can shift gears on my motorcycle easily like the way i do with my regular shoes. also, taking my shin guard off helps me change it a little bit better. but is there a technique or something i have to know in order to change gears with my boots?

motonet answers:

You just need to wear the boots in as much as you can. Where them around the house. Another suggestion is to leave them out in the sun for a bit.

You may also be finding it hard as the shoes you wore before would most likely bend so you used just your toes to shift. The boots won’t bend at the toe so you have to get accustomed to using the whole foot movement to shift and not just focussing on the toes. Bend at the ankle

James asks…

motocross shifting or using clutch?

im no pro, you can see by my last question my yz125 is my 2nd mx bike after the kx85. with the kx i used to shift gears just let off the throttle, change gear and pull back on the throttle again. but i want to know if shifting is bad? should i use the clutch? problem with using the clutch is that i tend to have bad timing trying to control the clutch + throttle + gears all at the same time :/

motonet answers:

You are not doing your bike any harm as bikes are manufactured with what is called a crash gearbox. So you don’t need to use the clutch when changing. Just keep doing what you are doing and as you get better try not to overuse the clutch in corners instead of changing to the right gear as this is a bad habit a lot of riders get into and if you ever end up riding sand events you will always be on the clutch and will be going to fit in a days riding without burning it out.

Charles asks…

how do you wear a knee/ shin guard with motocross boots at the same time?

How can you shift gears with both on?
i am talking about shifting gears with a motocross bike

motonet answers:

It becomes just the same as getting used to the boots. My youngest has worn the full on expensive knee braces for as long as I can remember racing as knee injury is a real problem with the sport. He wears skins first, then the knee high or over the knee racing socks and then the brace over that. The pants cover everything so when getting pants you need to try them on with the braces so you know that the pants wont be too restrictive. Then everything goes into the boots.
Once you get used to wearing all this you won’t ride without it. I know my son would not get on his bike without his knee braces on.

Shifting gears with knee braces on should not make a difference to shifting as the braces stop lateral movement and still have hinges to make it so you can bend your knee. The shin guards also allowed for knee bend so it really should not effect changing gears

Susan asks…

motocross simulator?

does anybody know if there is a motocross simulator out there? like one that actually has the actual bike that u sit on and you have to turn the throttle, shift gears, lean it, and all that other stuff, like your actually on a bike? if anybody knows of one or knows where one is please let me know!!!
i do motocross race! currently i am not tho! hence the reason i was wondering bout the simulator! i had a nasty crash racing with one of my friends (who is also a girl) and i shattered my wrist. so i have had to have surgery and stuff. happened oct. 21 so hopefully wont be to much longer till im back at it again!!!!

motonet answers:

nope, but if you find one, let us all know….

Your questions about motocross gear

Sharon asks…

Buying motocross gear for the first time, what do I need?

I’m buying my first Dirtbike soon and I wanted to know what gear I need for myself. I think I know what I need but I would like to make sure I have everything I need… can you give me a list?

motonet answers:

The first answerer has given you are very comprehensive list and the only thing I would add is a set of skins to wear under the gear. Not only great for comfort but also aid in faster energy and muscle recovery. If skins are too expensive you could just wear ladies or girls black footless tights as it just makes the pants more comfortable. Long socks are also great.

Robert asks…

How is Troy Lee Designs motocross gear?

How tough is and total performance? It looks nice!!!! Was thing about the GP.

motonet answers:

Nothing wrong with Troy Lee design gear. It seems as tough as any other of the known brand gear like fox

Laura asks…

What companies make motocross gear?

I need a helmet and gloves cause I will be doing only recreational offroading not racing. I know of the fox head company they have some nice products, but does anyone know of any other brands that make off road helmets and apparel also in the color red. Since I have a honda crf230. thanks.

motonet answers:

well thankfully ur not limited, all brands make a red helmet (duh? lol).

if u have some real $$ to spend, I would get a quality Arai helmet, theyre expensive but make amazing helmets

but if ur only willing to spend a little, some good brands are HJC, Bell, One Ind., Thor, or Fox

Ruth asks…

What are some good websites to buy motocross gear and can i get a honda crf150r for cheaper then the dealers?

motonet answers:

motoworldracing.com and motosport.com
you can get all the gear you need to ride (helmet, boots, gloves, goggles etc.) also parts and accessories for your dirtbike.
And yes you can get a honda crf150r cheaper then the dealers by buying it used somewhere. Try craigslist or something like that

Jenny asks…

How helpful would motocross protective gear (chest protector, elbow and knee pads, etc) be in a street crash?

Just wondering, as I am a beginning streetbike rider, and while I am a very good driver, many others are not.

motonet answers:

every bit helps… better too much than not enough..

Your questions about motocross gear

Lisa asks…

Anyone looking to get rid of motocross gear and equipment?

I am looking at buying a dirtbike, a yamaha ttr125, and I was wandering if anyone was looking to see any gear. I am a female, about 5’6. I guess I am looking to see what anyone is interested in selling.?

motonet answers:

If you are just after cheap used gear then look on ebay. Heaps of people get rid of their used and outgrown or unwanted gear on ebay and you can usually get it pretty cheap. Otherwise look on sites like btosports as they may have closeout sales,

William asks…

How do I wash motocross gear?

Im wondering how to thoughroly but properly wash my motocross boots, pants and ballistic jersey, they are all barely a week old and i want to take care of them properly as they were extremely expensive.

motonet answers:

Boots- my brother used to put under the jet wash….orr hand wash them and polish ontop…

Jersey check the label… u shud be able to put it in the washing machine, if i dnt want to put the t-shirt into a bag of sum sort, cloth obviously to protect …. (if u have ur name on the back and ur number)

if u stand far enough back if it is completely full of mud ur kit, then jet wash it! it wont damage nefing aslong as ur far enough back :)

and put it into the washing machine..

Hope this helped this is wat my parents did twice a week for my brother, his kits were fine!

good luck :-)

Steven asks…

What is the best motocross apparel or gear shop in Cape Town, South Africa?

Motocross Gear/Apparel South Africa

motonet answers:

You my be better going online.

That way, you can pick what you want.

Carol asks…

How do I measure myself for motocross gear?

!LINKS ARE APPRECIATED! I need to know how to find my size for helmet, jersey, pants, gloves, neck brace, knee brace, chest protector,etc.,etc. Thanks in advance

motonet answers:

Honesty here, your best bet is to actually try it on. Different brands are all over the place…for example in Thor I don’t fit into the smallest women’s size I have to use little girls gear in their brand. For Fox I wear a 3/4!? I typically wear a size 1/2 jean size but that isn’t the best thing to go with when dealing with mx gear. I tried that one time and I had to send back the gear I ordered online because it was ALL wrong! It is nicer to actually try the gear on so you can find what kind of fit you like and what you will find most comfortable when riding. ( Which is important…you don’t want major wedgies when your riding, ya know.)
Please trust me and check out a dealership that sells bikes or mx gear in your area and slip on a few different brands to find what YOU prefer. I’d compare mx gear to jeans…you may be a 0 in one brand and a 2 in another…just don’t know unless you try it! Good luck on your search.

Ruth asks…

Motocross gear company starting with an O?

I was at Chicago Cycle the other day and saw a bunch of motocross gear made by a company starting with an O – Anyone have any idea what the companies name is? I wanted to check them out on the web but forgot the name of the company… They had jerseys and also had these sweet laptop backpacks…
It wasn’t ONeal… I wanna say it was like Ocio or something but haven’t been able to find that on the web….

motonet answers:

There is a company called ogio that make gear bags and hydration systems for motocross. I don’t know if they make jerseys and pants but they may. Other than that I can only think of Oxtar. You could have a look at some of their products at mxsouth.com

Your questions about alpinestars clothing

Thomas asks…

What stores sell Alpinestars clothing and/or products?

Maybe a store in the mall? I live in Georgia.

motonet answers:

I don’t live in Georgia, I’m out in california. I ride for a shop out here that sells alpinestars gear, cloths, and other products… its a lot cheaper than if you bought stuff from the mall. Go to the link below to check it out. Go throught the pages and check it out.

Daniel asks…

GIRLS: do you like alpinestars clothing?

I think it’s so cute:)
the motorcycle inspired clothing

motonet answers:

Never heard of it :/

I don’t really like a particular brand of clothing. Well, maybe band tees XD

Normally I just get whatever is comfy and that isn’t too expensive.

Steven asks…

If someone wore Pacsun clothing..?

I like some of Pacsun’s clothing, however I’ve noticed that most of what I like is skater clothing or racing clothing (Fox, Alpinestars) and I don’t skate or race bikes..

So should I not buy them? Would it make me a poser?

motonet answers:

All my clothes are from there.

And you should deff buy them, because if you like it, It does not matter if you don’t skate or do anything else. It would not make you a poser.
You are a poser if you say you skate and you DON’T.

So don’t you care about that and buy it if you really like it..

Well at least that is my opinion………

Lizzie asks…

Im looking for a freelance graphic designer to make me a logo.?

I am starting a clothing line and I really dont have any ideas for a logo. I am looking to start something along the lines of motocross, mma, skateboarding and all around extreme sports those type of clothing likes.
Metal Mulisha.
Alpinestars.
Tapout.
Rockstar Energy.
etc etc
If you could point me to a person who has a myspace or website and has a portfolio that would be helpful. Pass this along to any graphic designers and we can get in touch.

motonet answers:

I have a friend who makes custom logos and online portfolios/websites for dirt cheap. Shes a really good graphic designer, and is also a photographer. She makes logos and professional websites for just about any one and has done fashion companies, photography companies, model agenices, etc. Give her a try here:
