motonet answers:

No degree is needed, however what your doing is great, photography is a skill that is learnt, using light and making images to order does require study so make sure you excell at the studio component of your course if you wish to be above the wedding fotog level….

Find a niche, make a portfolio and take it to those hire photographers in that niche,

anyone that that can learn lighting and design and can sell themself can do it, having the “eye” and so forth is garbage, great photographers study light and making images

some business courses would be helpful, finding a niche that pays is the key i have found

Education level I’m not sure. But for classes, art classes and you might wanna start with a photography class. And a web design class because some photographers build/design their own pages (you can get someone else to design it). If u want to have your own business, a business class or how to manage your own business class wouldn’t hurt. Try going to work in a photography shop, be an assistant so you can get a good feel of the work. Gotta be handy with cameras, lighting, computers…. Def a computer cause you use it to edit….

I started out the same way. My first camera was a Brownie Holiday Flash, and a Mamiya-Kominar/Tower 18B from Sears, with a fixed 50mm lens. Today, I advise those like you to use their cellphone camera to take pictures until they can reliably make images with proper composition, lighting, and exposure. As example, I provide a link, http://s852.photobucket.com/albums/ab86/starman2009/, to pictures I made on vacation in 2009 with my phone camera.

To really learn how to make pictures, try to imitate those you see in magazines and books that catch your eye. Whenever possible, keep a copy, either by photographing the picture with your cellphone camera, or copying it on a scanner, or even tearing the page out of the magazine. If all else fails, keep a notebook at hand and sketch the picture. Being able to draw has been one of the most useful skills I’ve found.

Your collection is what’s called a “swipe file,” and you review it from time to time for ideas for your own work. Learn how to “see” the picture BEFORE you pull out the camera. If you’re “making” pictures, as opposed to “taking” them, always LOOK FOR THE BACKGROUND FIRST, then place your subject in front of it and shoot the shot.

Lastly, take your images to a photographer and ask for guidance. You might also take some of them, along with a story describing them, to newspapers and magazines in your area, or even send them out of town. Some may print them, or perhaps send them back with words of advice.

Sorry but Walmart don’t sell “photographers”, but they sell cameras!!! Try one of those, they are cheaper to maintain (a photographer needs food, clothing, equipment, car, apartment and so on). So try buying a camera instead of a “photographer”.

Is anyone on here a professional photographer?

ok here’s the deal i need 2 interview a professional photographer for my career Research Paper.

2.What do you enjoy most about this job?

1. I chose this because it was something that I was passionate about. I started out as a journalist in a local paper. It wasn’t fitting me right, and then my boss saw my photography and decided to switch me. As a little kid, I always used to steal my mothers camera to take pictures of things, and I got really good at it. And then one day, I just new that I wanted to be a photographer.
2. I enjoy having such a free and open minded occupation. I love being able to take pictures of anything and everything around me. I love when I see that I have taken a really good picture, because then I know that I have been improving. I also enjoy looking at the world through the lens. You see things so much differently.
3. I took various classes, to outline the requirements and professionalism of being a photographer. I took a year apprenticing a professional photographer to learn about lighting and angles, and all of the important things, and then I just went.
4. There really is no average salary for this occupation. It depends on a lot of things. Most importantly, how good you are at this job. Depending on the kind of job you get, you could be paid by the picture, or by the hour. And unfortunately, there is a good chance that you could be unemployed.
5. With my job, there isn’t really a line between working and pleasure photography. I bring in pictures that I take in my free time, or I go out to find pictures. I almost always have a camera around my neck, and my supplies in my car.

90% of the time, my white balance is on auto. The only time I change is is if I am using a flash with a CTO gel while photographing inside. Even though everything is tungsten light, the camera would automatically switch to “flash” when the flash is attached, so I manually set it to tungsten.

Generally, I use evaluative metering then use exposure compensation if neccesary.

motonet answers:

In short. NO. You don’t need any GCSE’s or any formal qualifications to become a professional photographer.

BUT, getting a formal education in photography does help a great deal. Forging a successful career in photography is a very difficult task. If you go to uni or college, you will have instant access to high end equipment including camera’s and studios that you might not get otherwise. Plus, whilst there you can make all the usual mistakes people make and they won’t really matter much whereas when you’re out there in the real world trying to make a life out of it and trying to earn money, there isn’t really much scope for mistakes.

Plus what being in education will do is teach you the theory side of things too and, while that might not sound tempting, it will give your practice more depth and set you apart from those out there who go buy a camera, read a couple of magazines on technique and call themselves pro’s (sorry, snobby i know but it irritates the hell out of me).

And there’s also the connection’s you’ll make whilst working alongside industry. These are invaluable and you cannot make enough whereas out in the real world without the experience you’re going to struggle to keep your head above the crowd and get noticed.

A uni course is 3 years full time. I’m not sure how long a GCSE course is since they’ve changed a lot since i took mine.

Well he probably has a little experience in taking photos of nature
basic anyone can pick up a camera and try to be a photographer

this means that he probably has no real experience or has ever worked for a professional place of business

make sure he has a legit camera, find out his experience, get more examples, find if he had any previous work or had taken any photographer classes

i suggest you just go to a professional because sometimes semi professional means that they are inexperienced

You can potentially earn millions.
Most pros earn between 25-50k (you can pick your own currency as it is roughly that amount in US UK or EURO)

Many so called pros start their business with absolutely no actual business knowledge – earn peanuts and go bust in months.

You can search google or bing like the other person said. You can also search on www.craigslist.org and www.modelmahem.com
A couple things to remember:
1. Make sure you are with a friend
2. You will probably feel more comfortable with a lady photographer, and she will know what you want to show, and what you want to hide.
(This coming from a guy)
3. Beware the creepers!!!! This area of photography is full of creepers. More so on Craigslist, less on model mahem, and studios.
4. Look at their work!!!

motonet answers:

First get some experience as a pro by working for one as an assistant.
You did not mention where you learned how to use your camera (like school?) You will need at least a few semesters of this to have the skills necessary to be a pro and develop a good book (portfolio) to get a job with a photographer.

Shooting for fee tells everyone how much your work is worth … Not a good thing … You can flip burgers for $8 an hour, so your work has to be at least that good.

It takes years of working in one of the specialties in photography to develop a style that photo editors and art directors will associate with you.

Look here to see what the pros in your area are doing:

http://www.asmp.org/findaphotographer/

Maybe you can get one of them to hire you.

Then, once you have your education, experience and all your gear make an appointment with SCORE and have them help you develop a business plan and marketing plan. From there you will want to start an LLC and build a website. You can see if your business idea passes the “giggle” test and later the “smell” test by building a P&L spreadsheet. That will tell you more that any other business tool in a very short time.

In five to six years, you may be ready to go out on your own.

motonet answers:

The title “professional photographer” is one that you confer upon yourself. Just look in the mirror and declare yourself a professional photographer. That is all that is required. Unlike disciplines like law or medicine, you don’t need to complete years of formal training or pass a tedious exam.

You don’t need a degree. You don’t need a job. You don’t even need a camera. One of my colleagues nearby creates scenes on a flatbed scanner using 2-D and 3-D objects and creates enviable photographic art. Just say the words; it’s like magic.

And has been for me since 1989…

I hope this helps!

motonet answers:

Interesting question. Depends on what kind of photographer, and what kind of talent you have. Before I start, I have seen so many photojournalist go into studio photography because they just didn’t have the right eye.

There are different kinds of photographers. Some work on great technique, others want to tell a story though image which requires dynamic creativity at a moments notice.

The aim is always a great photo, great composition, and such, but the best way to find out what you might like is just pick up any old camera and start shooting. If you see something coming out, try to find a good entry-level camera to expand your skills.

I would recommend a good old fashion 35 mm SLR (I started with a Pentax K1000-as manual as you can get), with little automatic features, manual focus and a variety of cheap lens and filters for various effects.

If you decide to take it to the next step, take some photography classes in high school and college. If you want to go photojournalism, you are going to need your undergraduate degree to even get an interview.

Most new photographers work for free, or hardly anything. Most start out shooting the local sporting events, and going on’s for the idea of giving or selling to the local news for credit. Once you build a portfolio, you will also build a client base that will one day hopefully start paying you for your endeavors.

Talent and experience says the most. Well-rounded is ideal. But it all starts with the interest.

The other part is to network with the local photographers in your area. If you shoot football games, you will meet a few shutterbugs. They will give you some ideas about what you can expect in selling shots and getting jobs at various newspapers. At least for you, most local newspapers are so cheap, they welcome new people for just the savings.

Photography is an art but there’s more to it. You also have to understand the science and technology behind the equipment we use.

You will have to understand the basics of composition, balance, color, light, contrast, etc, etc, etc…. And you will also need to know how to set your focal length, aperture, shutter speed and set how and when. There’s a quite a bit of math involved in this as well.

If you have ZERO knowledge or experience, a good place to start is a photography class at high school or college. It will usually teach you all the basics of composition, technique, as well as technology and theory.

What kind of camera really doesn’t matter. Typically, you’d start with SLR (single lens reflex) type camera where you can change your lens. You may start with film or digital. If you cannot afford an SLR, you can actually use any point-and-shoot type camera. You will have some limitations but it will be a good tool to learn proper composition.

As to books, here’s an idea. Just go to your local library and grab anything to do with photography. You should be able to find a few dozen. Just start reading. Since you have no knowledge at this point, anything you read will be a gain.

motonet answers:

You may have noticed that the pros use either full frame cameras like the Nikon D3s or Canon 1Ds, Mark III (both over $5,000) or cropped frame cameras like the Nikon D300 or Canon 7D (both close to $2,000) These prices do NOT include any lenses.

Usually by the time you have taken enough classes in photography and worked as an assistant to a pro, you will know what you need. You seem to think that if you buy the “right” camera, becoming a pro is easy.

Spend some time rummaging around in the Nikon and Canon websites and see what is available in the way of professional camera systems and then sign up for a class in photography..

If this is someone you would normally invite to the wedding then don’t hire her. You are correct, working would take away the pleasure of the event because she wouldn’t be able to visit w/ the rest of the family while she is working.

At least that’s how it works for the photographers in my family: they don’t want to work at family events like weddings but they are open to portrait settings. (so maybe you can work in some kind of compromise)

That’s a pretty broad question, but I will state a few things just off the top of my head:

Lens hood

Quality hot shoe mount external flash

Radio and infrared trigger units for above flash and for studio lights

Various filters such as polarizer, neutral density, graduated neutral density, an 812 warming filter to reduce blue cast with daylight film in the shade.

Battery grip if the camera does not have one built in.

Those are camera specific. That does not even touch the myriad of things such as studio lights, reflectors, lenses, tripods, backgrounds, cases, and software / computers.

How much should I be willing to pay a Certified Professional Photographer?

I’ve been searching for a photographer for a wedding, and recently came across one touting that he is a “Certified Professional Photographer” he wanted $500 just to talk to him and mentioned that $4000 was “about average” for a total cost. This seems extreme to me, and I wish to compare, but can’t find any price lists anywhere. So does anyone know what the average “certified professional photographer” really costs?

motonet answers:

Ok- first of all there is no certification of photographers(in the US anyway)
As far as the price goes it depends on the area you are in. 4 grand sounds pricey to me, I wouldn’t pay that much, but that’s me. I have never charged for a meet. Usually at the meeting the photog shows the client his portfolio and then decides yes or no- if no, handshake, have nice day! If yes, the the contract comes out, is gone over agreed to and signed and then a deposit is collected to secure the date. The deposits can range any from 1/3 to half of the cost of the package. I just did a quik search and the average price for full day coverage is around $2500. That included prices as low as $200 to as high as $7000. Depending on what one was wanting.

Do you own a Nikon and does it make you a professional photographer?

Just because you bought a Nikon, does that make you a professional photographer?

motonet answers:

Nobody with more than half a brain in their head, or that knows anything about photography views Nikon owners as professional photographers just by the mere fact that they own a Nikon – especially if the Nikon owner happens to own one of the crappy Nikons – and, yes, Nikon has made one or two of those in its day.

Now, if you see someone with a digital Hasselblad, Mamiya, or PhaseOne, odds are pretty darn good THEY’RE a professional – either that, or they’re just so rich that they should probably be eaten by the peasantry.
